July 18, 2009-Laredo, TX-the Laredo Broncos got a walk off single by Luany Sanchea, as they beat the Edinburg Roadrunners by a score of 4-3 at Veterans Field, on Saturday.
The Broncos grabbed the early lead in the second inning. Luany Sanchez led off with a solo home run, his second of the season. That gave Laredo the early 1-0 lead.
Gregorio Martinez, the starter for the Broncos, sailed along through his first four innings of work. He only had one base runner reach in those innings. The Roadrunners threatened in the top of the fifth. They had the bases loaded with one out, when Hunter Owen laid down a perfect suicide squeeze. Scoring on the play was Eric Gonzalez. Robert Matlock followed with a two run single, scoring both B.J. Wheeler and Osiel Flores. That gave Edinburg the 3-1 lead.
Martinez was taken out of the game after six innings of work. He gave up three runs all of which were unearned, on three hits. He walked four and struck out five. Jeff Jamnik came into the game to pitch the seventh inning.
The Broncos tied the game in the bottom of the seventh. OJ Garza was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Ryan Flynn followed with a single which advanced Garza to third. Flynn moved to second on the throw trying to get Garza at third. The Roadrunners took out starter Danny Rondon, and brought in reliever Bryan Heaston. David Cardona followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Garza and Flynn moved to third. With Jaime Morales batting, a passed ball by the catcher Osiel Flores allowed Flynn to score. That tied the game at three.
Rondo lasted six innings for the Roadrunners. He gave up all three runs on seven hits. He walked two batters and struck out 6.
The Roadrunners loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning against relievers Jeff Jamnik and Fernando Rijo. However, Rijo was able to get Osiel Flores to hit into a double play to end the threat and keep the score 3-3.
Both teams did not score in the eighth and ninth innings, as the game headed to extra innings still tied at three.
The Broncos had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the 10th. Jaime Morales led off the inning with a walk. The Roadrunners then brought in Kelly Casares to try and get out of the jam. The first pitch by Casares was a wild one, which allowed Morales to move to second base. Mario Mendez, the next batter struck out. Argelis Nunez then drew the intentional walk to bring up Luany Sanchez. Sanchez hit a long single off the left field wall scoring Morales and giving the Broncos the 4-3 lead.
The Broncos scored 4 runs on 8 hits and had 2 errors while the Roadrunners scored 3 runs on 4 hits and had 1 error.
The Broncos are now 13-24 on the season while the Roadrunners are 17-20.
