BRONCOS RACE PAST ROADRUNNERS

Laredo, TX-the Laredo Broncos scored many different ways, as they beat the Edinburg Roadrunners by a score of 6-4 at Veterans Field, on Monday.

The Broncos grabbed the early lead on the first pitch in the bottom of the first.  David Cardona hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season.  Then with one out, Mario Mendez hit another solo home run, his seventh of the season.  With two outs, Luany Sanchez walked.  Andres Santos then reached on a throwing error by the third baseman Osiel Flores.  Sanchez advanced to third, while Santos advanced to second.  Robert Moron came up next and hit a two run single, scoring both Sanchez and Santos.   That gave Laredo the 4-0 lead.

The Roadrunners scored their first runs in the third inning.  Eric Gonzalez hit a two run home run, his third of the season.  The home run cut the lead in half for the Broncos, as the score now was 4-2.

The Broncos extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.  With one out, Mario Mendez singled and then stole second base.  Luany Sanchez then came to the plate with two away, and hit a rbi single scoring Mendez.  That made the score 5-2 in favor of Laredo.

Edinburg answered in the top half of the sixth.  With two outs, Robert Matlock hit a rbi single scoring B.J. Wheeler from second.  Eric Gonzalez followed with a rbi single of his own scoring Matlock.  Laredo now led by one, the score was 5-4.

Broncos’ starter Will Palmer left the ballgame after six innings of work.  He gave up four runs on 13 hits.  He walked one batter, struck out two, and also picked off two runs.  He left the game in line for the win, as Julio Pinto became the new Laredo pitcher.

The Broncos tacked on another run in the seventh inning on a bizarre play.  With Mario Mendez on third base after a triple, Argelis Nunez was facing a new pitcher Bryan Heaston.  He it a ground ball right to the second baseman who fired home, Mendez was eventually tagged out after a run down.  After the tag was applied, Edinburg tried to get Nunez who had made a big turn around second base.  The ball ended up in centerfield, and Nunez was able to score all the way from second.  Just as he was about to cross home plate, the lights went out at Veterans Field, causing a delay.   After a delay of about 12 minutes, Heaston recorded the third out.  The score was now 6-4 in favor of Laredo.

The Roadrunners’ starter Miguel Martinez left after six and a third innings.  He gave up six runs, four of which were earned on seven hits.  He walked three batters and struck out three.

Fernando Rijo came into the game for the Broncos in the eighth.  He pitched a scoreless inning and the Broncos’ bats did nothing in their half of the eighth.  We went to the ninth with Laredo leading by two and Franklyn Gracesqui coming in for the save.

Gracesqui, pitched a scoreless ninth inning, as the Broncos picked up the victory by a score of 6-4.

The Broncos scored 6 runs on 10 hits and had 0 errors while the Roadrunners scored 4 runs on 13 hits and had 3 errors.

The Broncos are now 14-25 on the season while the Roadrunners are 18-21.  The Broncos will next be in action Tuesday July 21st, as they play the finale of a four game series against the Edinburg Roadrunners in Laredo at 7:30.  You can listen to that game and all 80 Broncos games this year on our website www.laredobroncos.com through our partners at www.sportsujuice.com.
