BRONCOS CAN’T OVERCOME EARLY DEFECIT IN LOSS TO DILLAS

July 10, 2009-Amarillo, TX-the Laredo Broncos rallied late, but their comeback fell short as they lost to the Amarillo Dillas by a score of 14-8 at Amarillo National Bank Dilla Villa, on Friday.
The Broncos struck first in the top of the 1st inning. Robert Moron walked to start off the inning. Then with 2 outs, Argelis Nunez doubled scoring Moron from 1st and giving Laredo the 1-0 lead.
The Dillas first inning was a big one. They loaded the bases with no one out, on 2 walks and a single. Terrance McClain then drew the bases loaded walk scoring Keanon Simon. Trent Lockwood followed with a 2 run single scoring both Andrew Wong and Carlos Figueroa. Rafael Ozuna then hit a rbi groundout scoring McClain. Broncos’ starter Travis Parker would leave the game with 2 outs in the 1st, and Jason Herman came in to replace him. Herman got the last out as the Dillas led 4-1.
Parker only lasted 2/3 of an inning giving up 4 runs on 2 hits. He walked 1 batter and struck out none.
The Dillas scored again in the 2nd inning. With 1 out Andrew Wong hit a tapper back to the pitcher Herman. Herman threw to 1st, but 1st baseman Robert Moron lost it in the sun and the ball got by him. Wong was able to get to 2nd base on the play. Carlos Figueroa then singled scoring Wong. Terrance McClain reached on an infield single, which was followed by a 3 run home run by Trent Lockwood. For Lockwood, that home run was his 10th of the season. That gave Amarillo a 8-1 lead.
Herman would be done for the Broncos, after his 1 1/3 innings of work. ‘Edgar Soto came into the game for the 3rd inning. The Dillas added on to their lead off of Soto. Terrance McClain hit a rbi single scoring Andrew Wong. Trent Lockwood followed with a rbi single of his own, which scored Carlos Figueroa. That gave Amarillo the 10-1 lead.
The Broncos got back on the scoreboard in the 4th. Argelis Nunez singled to lead off the inning. With 1 out, Anthony Bennett tripled which scored Nunez. OJ Garza followed that at bat with a walk. Jaime Morales then singled in Bennett, while Garza moved to 2nd. That would make the score 10-3.
Amarillo tacked on a run in the 5th. Terrance McClain came up with runners on the corners and 1 out. McClain would reach on a fielder’s choice with Andrew Wong scoring. That made the score 11-3.
The Broncos got closer in the 6th inning. Anthony Bennett led off with a single. With 1 out, Jaime Morales singled moving Bennett to 2nd. Jake Wells then came up to pinch hit for Ryan Flynn and drew a walk to load the bases. Robert Moron then hit a single scoring Bennett and leaving the bases loaded. Miguel Ortiz then hit a sacrifice fly scoring Morales and moving Wells to 3rd. Mario Mendez then delivered a 3 run home run, his 6th of the season. That would chase starter Jesse Rodriguez from the game, as Coby Mavroulis came into the game. He got out of the inning as the Broncos only trailed by 3 runs.
The Dillas extended their lead in the 7th off of Broncos’ reliever Carlos Alvarez. Carlos Figueroa led off with a triple. Terrance McClain then reached on a error by right fielder Mario Mendez which allowed Figueroa to score. That gave Amarillo a 12-8 lead.
The Dillas added on to their lead in the 8th. With 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Carlos Figueroa hit a pop fly that was dropped by catcher Jake Wells. Figueroa was not running on the play so the Broncos had a chance to get him at 1st. However, Wells throw got by the 1st baseman allowing both runners to score. That made the score 14-8 heading to the 9th.
Amarillo’s closer Robbie Wooley would come into the game and keep the Bronco’s off the scoreboard as the Dillas won by a score of 14-8..
The Broncos scored 8 runs on 12 hits and had 4 errors while the Dillas scored 14 runs on 15 hits and had 0 errors.
The Broncos are now 9-20 on the season while the Dillas are 15-14. The Broncos will next be in action Saturday July 11th, as they play game 2 of a 4 game series against the Amarillo Dillas in Amarillo at 7:05.
