Congressman Cuellar announces $2 million for noise mitigation

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Henry Cuellar today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded a $2 million grant to the Laredo International Airport for noise mitigation

The money will be used to help residents living south of the airport from Highway 59 (Saunders) in the north to Clark Boulevard in the south and from Arkansas Avenue in the west to the Eastwoods Subdivision area in the east.

Residents seeking to soundproof their homes will need to commit to one of the following:

·       Sell their property to the city of Laredo at fair market value

·       Allow the city of Laredo to make their home soundproof with the condition of conveying a navigation easement (giving the city the right to allow aircrafts to fly over their property)

·       Sell the city of Laredo a navigation easement

“I am always pleased when the federal government makes a concerted effort to help improve the quality of life for our residents.  It is imperative that our citizens are able to live a nice and peaceful life, and noise mitigation will help improve living conditions around the airport,” said Congressman Cuellar. “In today’s challenging economy, these funds will also create new jobs, strengthen our transportation infrastructure, and provide a major boost to the local economy.”

In working collaboratively with Mayor Raul G. Salinas, City Council Members, and Airport Director Jose Flores, Congressman Cuellar has secured $4 million for the Laredo International Airport within the last two weeks.

Two weeks ago, Congressman Cuellar announced $2 million for runway rehabilitation.
