City of Laredo Upcoming Events (Parks & Recreation)


Memorial Day Ceremony

On Monday, May 25, 2009 the City of Laredo in partnership with Webb County will be hosting this year’s Memorial Day Ceremony at Jarvis Plaza at 8:00am, honoring our fallen local military hero’s and all veterans. The ceremony will be dedicated to Jose Luis Munoz, Mario Herrera, Sam Brewster and PFC. Richard Castro Jr. The program will continue at the City Cemetery with transportation provided by El Metro.

Summer Program Registration

• Our annual summer registration will begin this Wednesday, May 27, 2009. Each summer program location will have its own registration. For more information on your recreation center date call 794-1760

Andy Ramos Park Re-Opening

Last week we announced the closing of Andy Ramos Park because of the construction of a soft walking track around the perimeter of the park area. This week we are happy to announce that the park will re-open today, Friday, May 22nd, the public will be able to enjoy the parks brand new amenity (new soft walking surface).

1st Annual Fish For Life Extravaganza

This event will be sponsored by the City of Laredo Parks and Leisure Services and Farmers Insurance, all proceeds to benefit the March of Dimes. The event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6th at Lake Casa Blanca from 7:00am to 3:00pm. There will be fishing, music, refreshments, games and prizes, fun for the whole family! The main feature will be a fishing tournament for youth and adults. Also featured at the event will be a steak cook-off and a car show.

Recreation Center Events

Spurs Youth Basketball League

The Playoff’s continue this Friday, May 22nd from 5:00pm to 10:00pm and Saturday, May 23rd from 9:00 am to 11:00am at the E. Hachar Recreation Center.

Closing ceremonies for the league will be held at the Civic Center on Friday, May 29, 2009 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Adult Basketball League

There will be no weekend games this week but the games will continue Tuesday, May 26th and Thursday May 28th at East Hachar, Farias, K. Tarver and Hillside Recreation Center.

DEFY (Drug Education For Youth) Graduation and Trip

The DEFY graduation ceremony originally scheduled for May 22nd has been changed to May 29th at the Sirloin Stockade from 6pm to 8pm. DEFY is a preemptive prevention program that works with youth between the ages of 9 – to 12- year olds and helps them engage in positive, healthy, drug-free lifestyle. The graduates will receive a certificate of completion and they and their parents will enjoy the ceremony and be provided with dinner. Head mentor for this program is Maria Harrison, Supervisor of Tarver Recreation Center; she receives help with the mentoring from several volunteers of different organizations including the U.S. District Attorney’s Office, who will sponsor a trip to Sea World on May 30th for all the graduating kids of this year’s program.

Library Events

Passports

The Library announced an extension of hours for Passport Applications. In addition to the Library’s regular Passport Application hours, Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., the Library will now accept Passport Applications on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. until the end of May. We continue to have a high numbers of applicants as the WHTI deadline approaches.

2009 Summer Reading Club

Registration for the Summer Reading Club is still ongoing! This program is designed to encourage youth to read for pleasure, to promote library usage and help maintain reading skills during the summer months. Lunch and snack will be provided by the LISD food program.

Tuesdays and Thursday
10:30 am – toddlers (5yrs under)
2:30 pm – 6yr to 8yr old
Monday and Wednesday
2:30 pm – 9yr to 13yr olds

Reading with Ringling Bros. And Barnum Bailey at the Laredo Public Library

This reading program is easy and fun for kids to participate. Kids can earn a FREE Ringling Bros. circus ticket by simply doing their library reading! Children from ages 2-12 can enroll with staff in the children’s area of the Laredo Public Library. Kids will receive cool bookmarks, clown noses and activity sheets, too! This unique library reading program will encourage children not only to read, but also to discover, dream and learn! Special “Advance Ambassadors of Laughter” will visit the Bruni Plaza Branch on June 3rd at 10:30 a.m. and the Main Library at 2:30 p.m.
