May 18, 2009-Laredo, TX- The Laredo Broncos of the United League announced that they have acquired OF Selwyn Langaigne from the Shreveport-Bossier Captains of the American Association.
Langaigne, a native of Venezuela, has had much success in his baseball career. He was signed as non drafted free agent by the Toronto Blue Jays in Dec of 1993. He would go on to play 8 years in the Blue Jays organization from 1994-2002. He began by playing rookie ball and made it all the way up to the Triple A club. After spending a few years in independent ball, he was signed to a contract by the Minnesota Twins in 2005 and played Double A ball for the year.
Then in 2006, Langaigne began a 3 year run with the Alexandria Aces of the United League. All 3 years there he hit over .300 including .345 in 06, .353 in 07. In both of those years Langaigne helped lead the Aces to back to back ULB Titles. Last year for the Aces, Langaigne hit .300 with 5 home runs and 50 RBI. Langaigne has proven himself to be a winner, and that is why Broncos Field Manager Ricardo Cuevas is glad to have him. “Selwyn Langaigne is a world class player. He has many years of experience and he can really hit the ball. With his bat and leadership in our lineup, the Broncos are going to be able to do a lot of damage.”
Langaigne has also played baseball internationally. He has spent a few years playing in the Mexican League, playing for teams like the Monterrey Sultanes. Langaigne also played for the Venezuela National team that won the 2009 Caribbean World Series alongside fellow Bronco Luis Ugueto. Langaigne had the opportunity to be traded to a couple of different teams, but wanted to come to the Laredo Broncos to win a championship.
According to Broncos General Manager Jose Melendez, acquiring Langaigne is one of the biggest moves in the Broncos 4 year history. “In my opinion the acquisition of Selwyn Langaigne belongs among one of the top moves the Broncos have made. This joins the ranks of getting players like Edgard Clemente, Santo Hernandez, Tristan Crawford, Luis Ugueto, Andres Santos, OJ Garza, and Gregorio Martinez. He brings so much to this ballclub, that it really seems like all the pieces are getting in place for a big 2009 season. Cuevas has done a great job in assembling a championship team” Speaking of Edgard Clemente, the former Bronco is tearing it up in the Mexican League playing for Yucatan Leones.
While the Broncos, roster is almost complete, Cuevas says they are not done yet as there are some big moves upcoming in the near future. Cuevas is happy with the way the team is shaping out, but he is knows he can make this team better, and make a run at a championship in 2009.
The Laredo Broncos begin their 4th season in 2009. The Broncos will play an 80 game season from June to September with 36 home games at Veterans Field. Season tickets and Sponsorship Packages are on sale in the Laredo Broncos office located at 2200 Santa Maria
