“El Protector Program” will be replaced by “Public Safety Officers”

The Laredo Police Department is taking a new approach at traffic and public safety awareness initiatives. The program, formally known as the “El Protector”, was once a fully funded TxDot grant program. The intent of the program was to have one officer solely assigned to duties dedicated to public safety awareness and education. Although the TxDot grant ended years ago the program was supported through the years by the Police Department to meet the need for public safety awareness and education. The needs of the public have continued to increase and now a new approach is being adopted at the Laredo Police Department. Instead of only one officer dedicated to public safety initiatives now there will be an entire team of “Public Safety Officers”. The officers assigned to the Community Relations Unit will now collectively take on the responsibilities of public safety education & awareness for the Laredo Police Department. This team of officers will meet the growing needs of the Laredo Community with many familiar outreach programs as well as developing new and exciting ways to keep the public safe. This is one of many new ideas that the City of Laredo will see in the months to come from the Laredo Police Department.
