Friday, April 17, 2009 ( Laredo , TX):
As the start of the 2009 Premier Development League (PDL) Regular Season quickly approaches, the defending Southern Conference Champion Laredo Heat Soccer Club is also starting to round out its master roster.
Today, the Heat announced four more players that were added to their roster, making the total number of players named so far eleven.
Of the four played named, two are returning players and two are fresh faces to the Heat line-up. The returning players are both local talent and one has been with the team since the inaugural Heat season in 2004. Dionisio “Nicho” Infante will be making the roster for a fifth straight year and his experience has been key for the Heat’s success over those years.
“Nicho’s ability to play several positions on the field has been very helpful to the team. He has played up front for us and has also been instrumental when playing on defense because he does have that knack of pushing forward and making runs”, said Heat Head Coach Israel Collazo.
The other local player returning to the Heat is LBJ High School Senior and Captain Frank Lara.
“I have seen Frank develop over the past two years and his game keeps getting better as he is getting older. He was a great asset this past season for Coach Eddie Silva’s team that made a strong run into the state’s soccer playoffs and I hope that success keeps up during our season”, added Collazo.
Lara will be graduating this coming May from LBJ and is currently ranked # 2 in his senior class academically. Frank is also a member of the National Honor Society and locally, is a Sames Scholar. After playing with the Heat this summer, Lara will be attending Southern Connecticut State University on academic and athletic scholarships.
The two newcomers to the roster are Albert Escovar and Erick Acevedo.Escovar has already completed his college eligibility at TAMIU and last season was a vital part of Coach Claudio Arias’ squad.
“Albert, or as he known to his teammates and friends, Chiti, is definitely one of the hardest working athletes that I have ever been around with”, mentioned Collazo. “Chiti is very well aware of my expectations from him up front and knows that his work ethic will be an important part of our success this coming season”.
Erick Acevedo is coming to the Heat as a player with PDL experience. Last season, Acevedo toiled with the expansion Houston Leones and this year decided to attend the Heat’s Invitational Tryouts to gauge his skills against players he played against last season.
“Erick brings a wealth of experience from playing in Mexico and last season in Houston . I am looking at Erick to assist Ordaz and Quiñones to stabilize our defense. Erick has also demonstrated a very calm demeanor towards his game that should also help us in the long run”, concluded Collazo.
