On February 25, United High School recently welcomed the new L.C.C./UTSA student mobile center to their campus. The unit is equipped with several computer stations that facilitate the completion of applications for college admissions, financial aid, grants and scholarships. The mobile center also scheduled stops at UISD’s Alexander High School, L.B.J. High School, and United South High School. Belinda Harmon, Director of Community Outreach for UTSA, observed that approximately 65 United High School students utilized center services during the three hour stop at the campus. ‘We had an excellent turnout and I am hopeful that we’ll  see good attendance numbers at the other three UISD high schools”, said Harmon.

The mobile center has also established routes for students attending high schools in Zapata and Hebbronville, and serves outlying colonias to promote continuing adult education services.

Araceli Duran, L.C.C.  Academic Advisor, says that the mobile center assists counselors at high schools by offering their students an additional outlet to prepare their college and financial aid applications. “The unit expedites services to graduating students and underclassmen who wish to start their application processes at an earlier date.” said Duran.

The mobile center was obtained through a grant from the Pioneer Foundation, which provides mobile units for outreach purposes to colleges and universities nationwide, and made its debut this past January. Any student or individual wishing  obtain more information about the mobile center may contact Araceli Duran at Laredo Community College, 794-4978.
