Earlier today, Council Member Mike Garza, Dist. I, City of Laredo Mayor Raul G. Salinas and Council Member Juan Narvaez, along with many other City of Laredo administrators, LBJ students, members and representatives of the Jerry Salinas and Newman families (who donated land for the project) and Mactec Engineering and Consulting, Inc. and Whitestone Construction, Ltd. joined together to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Ejido Extension project, linking San Nicolas Drive to Cielito Lindo Boulevard. The new roadway enhances traffic mobility in South Laredo by providing an alternative north/south arterial which will provide for safer and smoother traffic flow on both Ejido and State Highway 83.
The project, which cost over $2.1 million, utilized over $1.1 in City of Laredo Certificate of Obligation bond money and over $ 975,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development. In fact, at the ceremony, Elva Garcia, program manager for the San Antonio HUD Community Planning & Development field office was on hand to present a certificate, naming the City of Laredo to the ARRA Honor Roll, for spending the funds in a timely manner, in a manner that benefits not only the citizens and community, but the nation, as well, as the act was designed to do.
