Broncos Fall in Game One to Road Runners; Face Elimination

(August 31st, LAREDO, TX) –The Broncos (47-45) allowed eight runs in the first three innings and Edinburg (50-39) never looked back, taking game one of the opening round the of 2010 ULB playoffs by a final of 14-5. The Broncos will face elimination tomorrow night in Edinburg, needing a win to force a deciding game three in the series.
The Broncos, playing the ULB postseason for the second time in franchise history sent RHP Matt Gibbs (7-5) to the mound to start game one against the Edinburg Road Runners and RHP Jose Pablo Oyervidez (3-2).
Wilmer Pino doubled to start the game off of Gibbs and Felix Molina laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Pino to third base. Nelson Teilon hit a ground ball to third and Pino broke for the plate, Jonathan Cisneros tried to bare hand the ball and he dropped it, the run scored to give the Road Runners a 1-0 lead.
The Broncos stranded a pair in the bottom half of the first and trailed 1-0 heading to the second inning.
Edinburg’s Alexis Hernandez hit a two run homer in the top of the second off Gibbs to give the Road Runners a 3-0 lead.
Salvador Paniagua answered with a home run of his own in the bottom of the second to put the Broncos on the board, they trailed the ‘Runners 3-1.
Edinburg continued their offensive surge in the early goings of the ball game. In the top of the third against the first four hitters reached base, all by way of the single and Edinburg took a 5-1 lead after Concepcion knocked in two. Gibbs was pulled at this point, pitching two plus innings and allowing seven hits and seven earned runs; he walked one and struck out one. RHP Jeff Jamnik (5-4) came into the game out of the bullpen and Osiel Flores, with one out hit a two run triple to make it 7-1. Robert Matlock singled right behind Flores and to bring him home and give the Road Runners the 8-1 lead.
Laredo, in the top of the sixth picked up their fifth hit of the game, a solo home run off the bat of Maiko Loyola made it an 8-2 ball game; Edinburg in the lead.
Felix Molina hit a two run homer off of Jamnik in the top of the eighth to make it 10-2 Road Runners after Jamnik had held the ‘Runners scoreless from the fourth through the seventh innings.
The first four batters in the top of the ninth reached base for Edinburg and two scored on the Osiel Flores double to make it 12-2 Road Runners. Matlock knocked in a run with a single and Molina reached on an infield single to bring home a run and make it 14-2 Road Runners heading to the bottom of the ninth.
The Broncos loaded the bases with one out in the last half of the ninth and Nick Mahin brought home two with a single that hit the third base bag and hopped into left field to make the score 14-4 Road Runners. Ryan Flynn followed with an RBI single and the lead was 14-5 Road Runners. Road Runners manager Vince Moore went to the bullpen after RHP Carlos Rangel (0-0) walked Diaz to load the bases for the second time in the inning. RHP Mark Dibernardo came into the game and faced Maiko Loyola who popped out for the second out of the inning. Jonel Pacheco grounded into a game ending fielder’s choice and the Broncos were in the loss column.
