CONGRESSMAN CUELLAR VOTES IN SUPPORT OF SAVING THOUSANDS OF TEACHER JOBS IN TEXAS

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Henry Cuellar, TX-28, voted today in support of H.R. 1586, the Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act, which will save thousands of jobs for teachers, firefighters and police, while at the same time benefitting Texas school children and neighborhoods, all without increasing the deficit.
This bill makes critical investments to Texas’ educational system that will save an estimated 13,400 education jobs in Texas alone. Specifically, more than $66.4 will be awarded to school districts in Congressman Cuellar’s district.
“This is funding that schools can use right away in an effort to keep teachers on staff, prevent class size overload, and give students the instruction they need to learn, graduate, and pursue their dreams,” said Congressman Cuellar.
Congressman Cuellar and Texas Democrats fought to include provisions ensuring that Texas Gov. Rick Perry supplements state education funding instead of supplanting it. After passage of the Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009, Gov. Perry used the $3.2 billion in federal funds designated for education to supplant state funds, effectively shift the funding to the state’s Rainy Day Fund.
“This provision is critical to school districts in my congressional district,” said Congressman Cuellar. “It has received the support and endorsements of nearly 40 superintendents in my district.”
Under this bill, Texas will also receive $850,650 in increased federal Medicaid funding, a move that Cuellar said could not have come at a better time for the state’s budget.
“The Texas Medicaid caseload is growing eight percent faster than expected, thus creating a more than $1 billion shortfall,” Cuellar noted. “This legislation will also allow for hiring of more public service personnel, such as policemen and –women and fire fighters.”
The bill is expected tor reach the President’s desk this week for his signature.
