Broncos win 6-5 over Road Runners in series finale; win series three games to one

July 11th, EDINBURG, TX-The Broncos (19-25) jumped out to 6-1 lead over the Road Runners (28-13) and then held on as Edinburg attempted a comeback, only to fall short 6-5. The Broncos sent RHP Robert Roth (1-1) to the mound for his second start of the season against RHP Tim Haines (4-3) of the Road Runners in the series finale. The Broncos, after sweeping the double header last night, had a chance to win the series against Edinburg and move a game closer to first place.
Neither team scored in the first inning, though the Broncos stranded runners on first and third against Haines.
The Broncos took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on two walks, a hit batsman and a Road Runner error that allowed the first Broncos run to score, followed by an infield two run single by Kenny Gilbert.
Edinburg got on the board in the bottom of the second after Ambiorix Concepcion walked and stole second base. With two down a passed ball charged to Salvador Paniagua moved Concpecion to third base and then Alexis Hernandez knocked him to make the score Broncos 3, Road Runners 1.
The Broncos continued to add runs to their lead in the top of the third Nick Mahin singled, followed by a single off the bat of D.J Dixon that sent Mahin to third. Flynn knocked in Mahin with an RBI fielder’s choice to push the lead to 4-1 Broncos.
In the fourth Jason Diaz was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Carlos Arroyo then singled to move Diaz to third base. Kenny Gilbert came up and picked up his third RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-1 Broncos.
In the top of the seventh the Broncos added one more run, that proved to be the game winner. Salvador Paniagua singled to start off the inning followed by a Jonathan Cisneros single. Nick Mahin grounded into a fielder’s choice that moved Paniagua to third base. D.J Dixon knocked Paniagua home with a single to make the score 6-1 Broncos.
In the bottom of the seventh against RHP James Maxwell (0-0) the Road Runners would mount their comeback. Maxwell, making his Bronco debut gave up a single followed by a walk and then a two run double to Wilson Batista to cut the Broncos lead to 6-3.
In the bottom of the eighth LHP Brian Buchanan (4-1) was summoned from the bullpen, he faced just three batters, allowing all three to reach base and two to come home and score on an RBI double followed by an RBI single to make the score 6-5 Broncos.
RHP Maximinio De La Cruz came on in relief of Buchanan and got a huge double play off the bat of Wilmer Pino to end the inning and keep the Broncos in the lead 6-5.
In the bottom of the ninth De La Cruz remained on the mound and recorded the first two outs with ease. He then allowed a single and a walk to put the winning run on first base. Carlos Hereaud was the batter and he hit one to the deepest part of the ball park in left center field. Left fielder Kenny Gilbert tracked the ball all the way to wall before making the catch right up against the wall and the Broncos were in the win column 6-5.
The Broncos, by winning tonight in the series finale, won the series three games to one against Edinburg and have won four of their last five.
