Broncos give up seven runs in the fifth inning and fall to the Thunder 8-4

(June 18th)-ROBSTOWN, TX-The Broncos (9-14) fell to the Thunder (8-14) in game one of the series 8-4 after allowing seven runs in the fifth inning. LHP Brian Buchanan (2-1) made his fifth start of the season in Coastal Bend. Buchanan, winner of his last two starts, looked to continue keeping the Broncos in the win column after they took two of three from San Angelo at home. On the opposing mound was RHP J.J Trujillo (1-2) for the Thunder, making his fifth start of the year.
Buchanan had only allowed five hits through four and one third innings pitched and no runs. The Broncos had a 3-0 lead by way of a Wolgamot single in the first followed by a Gilbert single. Alex Fernandez made an error playing Gilbert’s single that allowed Wolgamot to score all the way from first and give the Broncos a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the third the Broncos would add another run. Ryan Flynn doubled to start the inning and Jason Diaz laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved Flynn to third. With two out Kenny Gilbert knocked home his 21st RBI of the season to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, David Fowler reached on an infield hit. Jason Diaz then reached on an error that brought Fowler home from second after a wild pitch by Trujillo moved Fowler to second. The Broncos were cruising behind Buchanan and a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth the game got away from the Broncos. Buchanan started the inning by walking Dustin Smith. Buchanan was then called for a balk and Smith moved to second base. After a fly out by Mike Goss , Ron Fenwick hit an RBI single to make the score 3-1 Broncos. Levy Ventura then doubled and manager Dan Firova went to the bullpen. In came LHP Vinnie Dechristofaro, with his team leading 2.38 ERA and league leading 15 appearance. Dechristofaro walked Brian Nichols to load the bases. Alex Fernandez then cleared the bases with a triple that put the Thunder up 4-3. After a groundout for the second out of the inning Kevin Butler homered to make the score 6-3 Thunder. Mike Lewis then doubled and Manager Firova went back to the bullpen. RHP Jeff Jamnik came into the game and walked Dustin Smith, who was batting for the second time in the inning. Mike Goss then hit an RBI single to make the score 7-3 Thunder.
In all the Broncos gave up seven runs, on six hits, and three walks in the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth Jamnik gave up a solo home run to Brian Nichols to make the score 8-3 Thunder.
In the bottom of the seventh Gilbert hit an RBI ground ruled double to bring home Diaz from second to make the score 8-4
Celson Polanco came in for the top of the ninth and shut the door on the Broncos and secure the 8-4 Thunder victory.

The Broncos are back in action tomorrow night at Borchard Field against the Thunder in game two of the four game series. Eric Eden is on the mound for the Broncos, making his first start since picking up his first professional win. First pitch at 7:05 PM.
