Laredo, TX:  Mayor Raul Salinas, Congressman Henry Cuellar, and Laredo Fire Department personnel on Monday unveiled a mobile command unit purchased with federal funds that will assist in local, regional, and statewide emergencies. The mobile command unit, which was custom-built for the Laredo Fire Department, was purchased with federal funds totaling $850,000 that Congressman Cuellar helped secure last year through the Department of Homeland Security. Fire officials will also kick-off a new fire prevention and safety awareness campaign. As part of the campaign, fire officials will communicate to the public via the local newspapers, radio stations, and television stations on ways to prevent and avoid fires as well as distribute smoke alarms to those in need in our community. The funds for the prevention and awareness campaign were part of a $400,000 grant from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, also known as AFG, and a match of $100,000 from the City of Laredo.

“Congressman Cuellar’s efforts in helping us obtain these funds will no doubt aid the Fire Department in fulfilling their mission of saving live and property”, Mayor Salinas, said.
