Another Car Crook Arrested by LPD Auto Theft Division

On April 19, 2010, at 2:30pm, a suspect by the name of Filiberto Martinez was arrested in the downtown area and was charged for outstanding warrants #10067 for Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle-SJF. Bond was set at $50,000 by J.P. R. Rangel.
On April 5, 2010 a victim reported his 1994 Dodge van stolen from the 1100 block of Grant Street. The vehicle owner stated that he witnessed a male subject stealing his van as the suspect drove towards International Bride I. The victim ran across the bridge and was able to notify Mexican Authorities as to the theft while the vehicle was still being inspected on the Mexican side of the bridge. Mexican Authorities detained the subject and identified him as Filiberto Martinez D.O.B. 8/16/81. On 4/6/10 the victim recovered his vehicle from Mexico authorities. The LPD Auto Theft Division conducted an investigation and was able to obtain a positive identification from the victim along with other evidence which proved that Filiberto Martinez was the person crossing the vehicle into Mexico. On 4/14/10 an arrest warrant was approved by the D.A’s office for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle S.J.F. Warrant #10067 was obtained from J.P. R. Rangel’s office and bond was set at $50,000.
On April 19, 2010 Filiberto Martinez was arrested. He was processed and remanded to Webb County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bond.
This investigation and arrest was made possible through the combined efforts of the United States Customs Service, the Laredo Police Patrol Division, Laredo Auto Theft Task Force and Mexican Authorities.
Filiberto Martinez has been arrested 3 times for previous auto theft crimes.
