Laredo Independent School District high schools have been realigned and are back together in the same district on the playing field. This morning, the University Interscholastic
League announced the new realignment to form District 29-5A.
The new 10-team district will include Martin, Nixon, Cigarroa, United, United South, Alexander, LBJ, Eagle Pass, Eagle Pass Winn, and Del Rio High Schools.
“Laredo ISD looks forward to the much anticipated UIL reclassification and realignment,” said Rene Ramirez, LISD athletic director. “We are glad that the realignment included all the Laredo schools and we are fortunate and eager to rekindle the spirit of friendly competition among the Laredo schools.”
“This will be great not only for our athletes, their families but the entire Laredo community.” continued Ramirez. “I know our athletes and coaches are looking forward to competing again in District 29-5A and we are hopeful that our teams will succeed against our new 2010-2011 opponents.”
During the last two years Martin, Nixon and Cigarroa were in districts with teams from San Antonio, Eagle Pass, Del Rio, Corpus Christi, Alice and Kingsville. Due to travel, the districts athletic budget took a significant hit.
Ramirez said strict and deliberate actions were taken this year to make sure our schools applied to move up to class 5A to keep everyone together. “As a school district we are excited about the realignment,” added Ramirez.
