Courtesy Ashley Patterson,

WASHINGTON, DC — Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) today announced that the U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves will tour the Border Colonias outside of Laredo , Texas , on Monday, February 1, 2010, to raise awareness throughout the community for the 2010 Census this spring.

Two weeks ago, Congressman Cuellar asked the Census Director to visit the Texas border region during a 2010 Census briefing in Washington D.C. Director Groves, Dallas Census Regional Director Gabriel Sanchez and Congressman Cuellar will visit Laredo’s 2010 Census Office, in addition to, touring the San Carlos Colonia next Monday.

A Colonia is a residential area along the U.S. Mexico Border where some of the most basic living necessities are not available, such as potable water, sewer systems, electricity, paved roads, and safe and sanitary housing. Poverty and substandard living conditions are widely prevalent throughout the Colonias.

As a member of the House Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census and National Archives, Congressman Cuellar has worked with the U.S. Census Bureau to ensure communications and outreach efforts will actively engage local communities in the 2010 Census, in particular those “hard to count” regions where participation is historically less than the national average. Since meeting with Congressman Cuellar this January, Director Groves has pledged his commitment to deploy more outreach to the “hard to count” Border region of Texas during the 2010 Census.
