In an effort to help protect residents from the hard freeze expected tonight, Webb County will be opening several community centers where residents can take shelter overnight as temperatures are expected to drop to the mid twenties.
“We’ve been monitoring the weather forecasts and just want to make sure that anyone who needs shelter, will have access to it,” said Webb County Judge Danny Valdez. “We have staff at the centers on call to help anyone who may need assistance to protect themselves from the cold.”
The Rio Bravo and Las Presas Community Centers will be opening their doors starting at 6 p.m. for those who wish to shelter themselves from the freezing temperatures. The centers will remain open until Saturday morning, January 9. Temperatures are expected to warm up by noon and a decision will be made Saturday afternoon if the shelters will be open again that night if needed.
“Once we learned of the freeze tonight Rio Bravo Mayor Nora Rivera and myself met and decided that the Rio Bravo and Las Presas Community Centers needed to be open for the residents living in the area,” said Webb County Commissioner Frank Sciaraffa. “The well-being of our citizens is our top priority,” Sciaraffa concluded.
Also, transportation will be provided to the Laredo Civic Center for those who do not a have means of transportation. The following centers will remain open until 8 p.m. to provide transportation to anyone who requests it:
Santa Teresita Community Center-956-418-6563
Larga Vista Community Center-712-3500
El Cenizo Community Center-718-8532
Those requesting transportation at the centers listed above will be transported to the Laredo Civic Center where cots will be provided as well as food and refreshments.
Residents are urged to take precautions and protect themselves from the freezing temperatures.
