Airport Runway Ribbon Cutting 018Today, City of Laredo officials, along with help from U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar and Texas State Representatives Richard Raymond, were on hand today to officially cut the ribbon for the Rehabilitation of Runway 17R/35L, which was funded 100 percent by the Federal Aviation Administration American Recovery and

Reinvestment Act (ARRA) in the amount of $10.5 million, or in this case, cut the cake.  Congressman Cuellar, joins District V Council Member Johnny Rendon, in whose district the airport lies, with Mayor Raul G. Salinas and Representative Raymond, who cut the cake, while City Manager Carlos Villarreal looks on.

Five months after ground breaking the project is now complete. The City of Laredo had the plans and specifications ready to bid and this helped to secure the ARRA Stimulus grant.  The project entailed the reconstruction of approximately (5,900 feet by 150 feet wide) a portion of Runway 17R/35L . The new pavement is all Portland Concrete and measures 16 inches thick.

The City of Laredo has reached a significant milestone with the total reconstruction of its three (3) runways during the past 12 years!

The conversion of an infrastructure designed for small trainer aircraft (Laredo Air Force Base) to civilian commercial use (large and heavy  aircraft) has been accomplished. In the process operational safety and capacity is enhanced.
