A special benefit Christmas Recital featuring acclaimed Laredo-born singer José Rubén De León will be held at Texas A&M International University Saturday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. in the Center for the Fine and Performing Arts’ Theatre. General admission is $10 and no reservations are required. Doors open at 2:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the University’s College of Arts and Sciences, department of fine and performing arts. De León will present The Holy Birth, a collection of Advent and Christmas songs. He says the event is “an unforgettable afternoon of flor y canto, poetry and song.”
De León will be accompanied on piano by Alejandra Rodríguez. This year, De León is also celebrating his 50th birthday and his 34 years as a stage performer. Since 1992, actor-playwright-musician José Rubén De León has created and performed several critically acclaimed musical productions. Lorca, a one-man drama based on the life and work of Spain’s best-known poet, Federico García Lorca, received wide acclaim and was named one of San Antonio’s best shows of 2003 (SA Express-News).
De León’s Simplemente Lara, a tribute to the life and music of Mexican composer Agustín Lara, was named one of the best shows of 2005 (SA Express-News). In May 2007, he received a Heritage Award by the Webb County Heritage Foundation for “outstanding work in preserving the musical heritage of the region as evidenced in Simplemente Lara.”
His latest musical tribute, Perfume de Gardenia: Songs of Puerto Rican Composer Rafael Hernández, premiered at Talento Bilingüe de Houston in May 2009. An accomplished vocalist and independent record producer, De León has also recorded four CDs. His recordings are available at joserubendeleon.com
