City of Laredo Honors Community Leaders, Students, and Organizations During City Council Meeting

LAREDO, Texas – The City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño and the Laredo City Council recognized a number of outstanding individuals, organizations, and teams during the regular City Council meeting held on Monday, March 16, 2026, celebrating their achievements, service, and contributions to the community.

Mayor Dr. Treviño presented the Veteran Community Service Award to Adolfo “Popo” González, a retired educator and Texas Army National Guard veteran whose life has been defined by service to both country and community.

Mr. González dedicated 39 years to military service, retiring as a Master Sergeant / First Sergeant, while also serving 36 years as an educator shaping the lives of students in Laredo. He has continued his service through his leadership as Chairman of Area 13 for the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), advocating for service members across Webb, Zapata, and Maverick counties.

“For his decades of leadership, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to those who have served our nation, Adolfo ‘Popo’ González is recognized with the Veteran Community Service Award,” said Mayor Dr. Treviño.

Mr. González has also played a key role in the Webb County Veterans Coalition, helped organize the Veterans Museum, and has volunteered extensively in the community, including over 15 years with the Laredo Regional Food Bank.

Mayor and Council recognized the Adapted Running and Walking Team, composed of athletes with Autism and Down Syndrome, for their inspiring participation in the Runway Run 5K and 1-Mile Walk held on January 31, 2026.

The team was created to promote inclusion, confidence, and active community engagement through athletics. Appreciation was also extended to the dedicated runner guides who supported the athletes throughout the event.

Additionally, Jonathan Ruiz Jr., Parks Department Recreation Specialist, was recognized for becoming the first-ever wheelchair participant in the Adaptive Division to successfully complete the Runway Run 5K.

His determination and perseverance marked a historic achievement and serve as an example of strength, inclusion, and excellence in the Laredo community.

The Mayor and Council also recognized Walmart Store 554 (San Bernardo) for being named the 2026 Division 1 Hometown Store of the Year.

Store representatives accepted the recognition on behalf of their team, highlighting the dedication and longevity of their associates.

“It takes a lot to win Store of the Year… It’s nice for us to be recognized by the City of Laredo with this outstanding award,” said a store representative.

The store was recognized for its strong employee retention, customer service, and commitment to the community.

The City of Laredo proudly recognized several local robotics teams for advancing to the World Championships, including:

Harmony School of Excellence – Mighty Hawks Robotics Team
John B. Alexander High School – Hotdawgs Robotics Team
John B. Alexander High School – Chillydawgs Robotics Team
Dr. Leo Cigarroa High School – Chaos Robotics Team
These teams represent the innovation, talent, and academic excellence of Laredo’s students on a global stage.
