Laredo, Texas — The City of Laredo Utilities Department is concluding its biannual free chlorine conversion process, an important step in maintaining water quality and ensuring the continued safety of the City’s drinking water system.

As the process wraps up, residents may notice Utilities Department crews operating at various fire hydrants across Laredo as part of the system-wide line-flushing procedure. This step helps remove residual chlorine and ensure a smooth transition back to the City’s regular chloramine disinfection method.

During the temporary conversion, which began on October 3, 2025, water continued to meet all state and federal safety standards. Some residents may have experienced brief changes in the taste or odor of their water, which are normal effects during this maintenance period and will return to normal as chloramines are reintroduced into the system.

The City of Laredo uses chloramines, a combination of chlorine and ammonia, as its primary disinfectant throughout the year. Periodically switching to free chlorine helps maintain system health by reducing nitrification, controlling excess ammonia, and keeping water lines clean.

The City of Laredo assures residents that the water remains safe to drink. Both chlorine and chloramine are approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for disinfecting drinking water. However, as the transition concludes, individuals with sensitive skin or eyes are encouraged to exercise caution. Anyone experiencing irritation or discomfort may consult their healthcare provider or contact the City of Laredo Health Department.

The City appreciates the community’s cooperation and understanding throughout this important maintenance process, which supports the long-term health, reliability, and quality of Laredo’s water system.
