Utilities Department to Begin Bi-Annual Water Treatment Process Required by TCEQ

Courtesy Noraida Negron,

Laredo, Texas — The City of Laredo Utilities Department will begin its bi-annual water treatment process, switching from chloramine disinfection to a free chlorine conversion. This treatment, required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), will begin today Friday, October 3, 2025, and will last for approximately 30 days.

During this period, residents may notice temporary changes in taste or odor. These effects are normal and expected. Water and sewer services will not be interrupted. The Utilities Department will provide updates as the process continues.

The City of Laredo uses chloramines (a mix of chlorine and ammonia) as its primary disinfectant.

Periodic conversion to free chlorine helps maintain water quality by controlling excess ammonia, reducing nitrification, and supporting long-term system health.
