Laredo, Texas— The City of Laredo is committed to transparency regarding the recent sewage pipe failure at the end of Zacatecas Street in South Laredo. Recent media reports have attributed this incident to various causes, including speculation about Border Patrol activities.
While Council Member Melissa Cigarroa expressed her personal observations on this matter through a regional news channel, the City of Laredo must clarify that her comments do not represent the official position of the City of Laredo. Under the City’s Home Rule Charter, the Mayor is the sole spokesperson for the City and is authorized to communicate its official stance.
The City of Laredo assures that there are no concerns with Border Patrol in connection to this incident. On the contrary, Border Patrol agents played a critical role in alerting the City to the exposed pipe, enabling a timely response to address the situation. Their cooperation underscores the collaborative relationship between agencies in maintaining public safety and infrastructure along the border.
The ongoing investigation has determined that the pipe was inadvertently compromised during the soil compaction efforts carried out by the department in the area. This was an unintended consequence of necessary maintenance work to mitigate erosion and ensure terrain stability.
While unfortunate, this incident highlights the challenges of maintaining aging infrastructure, and the City is using it as an opportunity to refine the processes and implement safeguards to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The City is focused on continuing to modernize its infrastructure to serve the community better. The public’s understanding is greatly appreciated, and the City of Laredo remains committed to transparency as it works toward long-term solutions.
