On October 5, 2009 at approximately two in the afternoon Karla Rivas was safely returned back to the custody of her mother, Sandra Rivas. Karla was appeared healthy, and in good condition according to initial reports. Karla Rivas was met at the international bridge 1 and transported with her mother to the Child Advocacy Center. Through the course of the investigation Karla openly admitted that she voluntarily left to Mexico and was never at any point in any peril. Karla admitted she had been in Mexico in the custody of relatives throughout the duration of the time she was reported missing. Throughout the investigation and the forensic interview and physical examination it appears at this point that she was never harmed and no criminal act ever took place. The case is still open until investigative and prosecutorial authorities have met to determine if any criminal sanctions, if any, will be charged in this case. It is important to note that a huge investigative undertaking was performed by the Laredo Police Department’s Criminal Investigative Divisions along with the assistance of Federal Law Enforcement agencies which also included a state wide amber alert.
