Graciela Lopez Elevates Student Wellness at Laredo College

(Laredo, Texas)-As Graciela Lopez crossed the Washington Bridge to start her role as director of student health and wellness at Laredo College, her first thought was that she was home.
She was excited to dive into the new role, driven by her long-time aspirations and dreams.Lopez’s career began in a home health agency, where she honed her skills before transitioning into a position at the Intensive Care Unit at Doctors Hospital. Following these roles, however, she discovered her passion for school nursing at Milton Elementary School within the Laredo Independent School District.
She began at Milton with only her nurse assistant. Lopez knew how to be a nurse, but she didn’t know how to navigate the school world, she said.During her time at Milton, Lopez navigated the intricate landscape of school health services, learning the ropes from her mentor and gradually stepping into leadership with her own team of nurses. Her most important role at LISD began at the peak of the pandemic.
Lopez dedicated her time as a frontline health worker for LISD protecting the student body, faculty and staff during one of the world’s most crucial times.
