Laredo College Commemorates Life of Laredo POW on Memorial Day

(Laredo, Texas)-Laredo College’s annual Memorial Day Observance on May 27 was a beautiful tribute to our nation’s fallen heroes. Local veterans and community members gathered on this special day to honor, remember and mourn the men and women who lost their lives while serving in our six branches of the military.
This year’s keynote speakers, Laura Gonzalez and Rolando Vera, are surviving family members of Army Sergeant Cresenciano Garcia Jr., a Korean War veteran and prisoner of war. A native Laredoan, Garcia was captured by enemy forces and passed away in captivity. His remains were not identified until April 2023.Gonzalez and Vera shared memories of the family mourning Sgt. Garcia’s death and their journey after being notified of the identification of his remains.
They talked about how they felt being able to bring him home to Laredo and lay him to rest alongside his parents after 73 years.
