Laredo, Texas — The City of Laredo Utilities Department announces the beginning of the annual water treatment free chlorine conversion from chloramine disinfection. This treatment is required by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and will begin on Sunday, March 03, 2024, and will last approximately 30 days. During this period, consumers may experience the taste and odor changes associated with this type of temporary disinfectant conversion. The water and sewer services will not be affected by this work. Progress updates will be made available by the Utilities Department.
The City of Laredo uses chloramines as a primary means of disinfection in the water distribution system. The combination of chlorine and ammonia forms chloramines. Converting the water system to periodically free chlorine disinfection helps prevent the accumulation of excess ammonia and nitrification and improve the long-term quality of the drinking water.
