City of Laredo Announces Closure and Warming Center

Courtesy Arturo Garcia,

Laredo, Texas — In light of the severe winter storm, and the dangerous low temperatures expected, the City of Laredo has made the difficult decision to close city services temporarily for Tuesday, January 16. While the City understands the essential nature of these services, the priority is the safety and well-being of city employees and the community.

This decision is not made lightly. The City recognizes the inconvenience this may cause, but believes it is the best course of action given the circumstances. City employees, like everyone else, need to be safe during this time, and it is a priority to ensure they are not put in harm’s way.

The City is encouraging everyone to stay home if possible and avoid unnecessary travel. If anyone is in need of a Warming Center, the City will open a temporary site at Haynes Recreation Center, located at 2102 Clark’s Crossing Dr., from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m., on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. The Laredo Animal Care Center will provide their Adoption Trailer to house up to 16 pets for those families staying at the warming center. The City of Laredo is prepared to open additional warming centers, if needed.

The community is reminded to bring pets indoors. A person found to have left their pet in freezing temperatures could face charges of animal cruelty, a Class A misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $4,000 and up to one year in jail.

Due to the extreme weather condition expected, the City’s Solid Waste Department will be picking up the trash but on a delay schedule. If a resident has a utility emergency, they may call 956-721-2010 or for additional information, call 3-1-1. The City will continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.
