Laredo, TX – U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28), a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, announced $375,000 in federal funding for the Webb County Sheriff’s Office and Casa de Misericordia Domestic Violence Shelter. The funding is awarded through the Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women.

The funding will allow the Webb County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with Casa de Misericordia Domestic Violence Shelter, to hire an investigator and a victim legal advocate while implementing trauma-informed and victim-centered services for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

“The DOJ’s Office on Violence Against Women does crucial work to support communities across the country in combatting domestic violence and sexual assault,” said Dr. Cuellar. “As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I have consistently fought to secure robust funding for programs that support victims of violent crime, and I will continue to work to ensure our South Texas communities are safe for all. Thank you to Sheriff Martin Cuellar for working with me to secure these federal dollars.”

Dr. Cuellar is a strong support of law enforcement. Since 2008, he secured $53,909,893 in Operation Stonegarden funding for the Webb County Sheriff’s Office to cover extraordinary expenses incurred to reinforce border security, including $4,305,000 in 2023. And since 2010, Dr. Cuellar secured $9,119,266 in COPS Hiring Program funding to hire 60 police officers in Laredo, including $1,875,000 for 15 officers in 2023.
