LAREDO, TX— The City of Laredo and District 5 Council Member, Ruben Gutierrez, Jr., celebrated the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Vietnam Veterans Plaza, on Wednesday, November 15, 2023.
This plaza/trail honors all the brave men and women who fought for our country during the Vietnam War. “There were 28 soldiers from Laredo who lost their lives in the Vietnam War and this project will not only represent and honor them for their service, but it is a way to say thank you and you will never be forgotten”, said Council Member, Ruben Gutierrez, Jr.
The Vietnam Veterans Plaza includes a trail, the plaza, the Eternal Flame, a symbol of the constant vigilance that America must maintain to ensure the freedom of its citizens, and an area for food trucks the community can enjoy.
During the ceremony, Vietnam Veteran Jesus “Guero” Segovia was recognized as Veteran of the Year by veteran groups present for his leadership and dedication to veterans in our community.
The next phase will include a wall naming all Laredo soldiers who died in the Vietnam War. The plaza is open to the public for residents and veterans to enjoy and it is adjacent to the Joe A. Guerra Laredo Public Library.
