Laredo, Texas — The Laredo Public Libraries’ One City, One Book program invites the entire community of Laredo to read, learn, and share a common experience by reading a powerful, thought-provoking book by a modern-day author. This year’s selection is Where the Dead Pause, and the Japanese Say Goodbye by Marie Mutsuki Mockett. This book also was selected by Texas A&M International University as the Global Read for the freshman class. This joint program is funded in part by Humanities Texas. The One City, One Book initiative will culminate with two visits by author Marie Mutsuki Mockett starting October 13, 2023.

Mutsuki Mockett’s visit to Laredo will start with an address to students and faculty at TAMIU on Friday, October 13. The next day, Saturday, October 14, the author will be at a reception at 9:30 AM and begin speaking at 10:30 AM at the Joe A. Guerra Library in the multi-purpose room, 1120 E. Calton Road (light refreshments will be available).

“Novelist Mockett (Picking Bones from Ash) embarks on a poignant spiritual journey through Japan, seeking solace after the death of her American father three years earlier and to bury her Japanese grandfather’s bones. Touching on themes of modernity and tradition, Mockett takes part in various religious customs to come to terms with her grief and understand her mixed-cultural heritage.” – Publishers Weekly.

Everyone in the community is invited to stop by the Laredo Public Library to check out a copy of Where the Dead Pause, and the Japanese Say Goodbye.

Copies of the book are available for checkout at all Laredo Public Libraries’ branches.
