Rep. Cuellar’s Statement on Mexican President López Obrador’s Fentanyl Letter to China

Courtesy Arturo Olivarez,

Washington, DC – U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) released the following statement after Mexican President López Obrador announced he sent a letter to China asking them to stop sending shipments of fentanyl into Mexico:

“Last month, I met with Mexican President López Obrador as part of a bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Delegation led by U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) to discuss the fentanyl epidemic and the serious risk it poses to both American and Mexican citizens.

President López Obrador said then that he’d talk to China, and I appreciate that his letter acknowledges China’s role in the ongoing fentanyl epidemic,” Congressman Cuellar. “As a border Representative, I see firsthand the effects that fentanyl has on our communities at the border and across the nation. That’s why we must support robust funding for our border law enforcement personnel, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), to keep our communities and our families safe.

I look forward to continuing our bipartisan, binational work with President López Obrador and our Mexican counterparts to stem the flow of fentanyl into the United States.”
