City of McAllen Budget Department Earns Industry Award

McAllen Budget Department receives prestigious recognition

(McAllen, Texcas)-Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has once again awarded the Certificate of Recognition to the City of McAllen for its annual budget report for the fiscal year beginning October 1, 2022. The award represents a significant achievement by McAllen’s Office of Management and Budget. It also reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

“This is an incredible award for the City of McAllen to have once again received because it recognizes the continued success of the Office of Management and Budget, led by their director Angie Rodriguez and her incredible team, but also, the work of the entire City of McAllen leadership to develop projects and services that benefit the residents and community in a fiscal and responsible manner,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E.

“We are all entrusted to not only be good stewards with the taxpayers’ money, but also, to demonstrate transparency with how that money is utilized,” he concluded. “I am most proud of how the City of McAllen budget accomplishes this task year after year.”

In order to the receive the budge award, the City of McAllen had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity’s budget serves as a policy document; a financial plan; an operations guide; and a communications device. Budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories and in the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.

“It’s an honor to receive this award on behalf of the City of McAllen,” said Angie Rodriguez. “I am grateful for all the support provided by our City Manager Roy Rodriguez, our elected officials, and all City departments. I would also like to recognize the Office of Management and Budget Department staff for their commitment to excellence to make this achievement possible. It’s truly a team effort to achieve this award.”

The City of McAllen Office of Management and Budget last received the Certificate of Recognition award in 2022. Over the years, the City of McAllen has received this recognition 33 years consecutively.

There are over 1,700 participants in the Budget Awards Program. The most recent Budget Award recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on GFOA’s website. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.
