Road repairs will alleviate systemic flooding and improve public safety

Rio Bravo, Texas— U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $2,000,000 in federal funding for street improvements in Rio Bravo. The funds will go towards repairing significant fissures on roadways and flood prevention measures to ensure roadways are passable after heavy rainfall. Currently, roadways are easily flooded and become impassable for emergency vehicles, school buses, and residents.

The funding comes from a $1,500,000 federal earmark Congressman Cuellar secured in the FY23 Omnibus Bill and a $500,000 local match by the City of Rio Bravo with federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

“The city of Rio Bravo has long suffered from a systematic lack on investment in public infrastructure—infrastructure that is crucial to the development and growth of a community,” said Congressman Cuellar. “With these federal funds, we will be able to guarantee the safety of the residents of Rio Bravo while positioning the community for growth and economic development. I want to thank Commissioner Jesse Gonzalez and the City of Rio Bravo for putting an emphasis on this project that will ultimately benefit all of south Webb County.”

“This is an exciting project that I’m eager to start working on for the constituents of Rio Bravo. I want to thank Congressman Henry Cuellar for bringing these much-needed funds to our area,” said Webb County Commissioner Jesse Gonzalez.

The road improvements will support the safety of Rio Bravo’s 4,450 residents as well as emergency services personnel who are not able to navigate the roads during flooding events.

Recently, Congressman Cuellar also announced $4.6 million in federal funding for the Webb County Health Center to be constructed at Modular Boulevard and Highway 83. The 9,600 square foot health center will provide a variety of medical services to the residents of Rio Bravo, El Cenizo, and La Presa. The center will enable the county to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and provide routine health care services, including vaccinations, dental care, and checkups.
