PBIS Back to School Training

The “Back to School Training on PBIS” was held on July 29 at the SAC by the Student Relations/Discipline Management Department of United ISD, directed by Annette Perez.

The core principles of PBIS center on proactive methods for defining, teaching, and encouraging proper student behaviors in order to foster a pleasant learning environment.

The PBIS principles are as follows:

Develop behavior and academic interventions and supports

Use data to make decisions and solve problems

Arrange the environment to prevent the development and occurrence of inappropriate behavior

Teach and encourage prosocial skills and behaviors

Implement behavioral practices with fidelity and accountability

Screen universally and monitor student performance & progress continuously

The school’s PBIS team will concentrate on three to five clearly stated and simple-to-remember behavioral standards.

The team then develops a matrix of what the behavioral standards and expectations should appear, sound, and feel like both within and outside of the classroom (e.g., the hallway, gym, restroom, cafeteria, playground, media center/library, etc.).

Choosing the methods for teaching the behavioral norms and routines within and outside of the school is another important objective for the PBIS team.

The PBIS team also establishes a reward/incentive program for students and staff who demonstrate the school’s behavioral expectations.

The climate of each learning community is different; therefore, PBIS behavioral expectations are based on the needs of each school.
