This new installment will ease congestion, add sidewalks, and improve mobility and walkability in District 6.
Laredo, Texas — On Monday, May 16, the City of Laredo and Council Member for District 6, Dr. Marte Martinez, introduced the newly installed Plantation East Drive extension during a press conference. Representatives shared further details about the overall project and how it will impact North Laredo.
The Plantation East Drive Extension consists of an eight-inch (8”) concrete road section and sidewalks connecting to Shiloh Drive. This extension will alleviate traffic congestion and improve mobility and walkability in North Laredo for residents in subdivisions including Deer Ridge, Prestwick Reserve at Deer Ridge, Winfield, and other surrounding neighborhoods connecting from Del Mar Boulevard to Shiloh Drive. Channel improvements were also made to reduce flooding in adjacent neighborhoods. Street improvements, water distribution, sanitary sewer, storm drainage, street lighting and other improvements had a total cost of approximately $553,000. Channel improvements costed approximately $750,000.
The project agreement was finalized in July 2019 between the City of Laredo and Roberto Rodriguez, developer and property owner. Mr. Rodriguez donated a tract of land to the City of Laredo, which was later approved by City Council. In 2021, the Laredo City Council approved to execute an agreement with Roberto Rodriguez for additional paving work to widen Plantation East. This project was completed with the help of engineering firms Gilpin Engineering Co. and Sherfey Engineering Co.
“The City of Laredo and District 6 have reached another milestone that will enhance quality of life for our constituents,” says Dr. Marte Martinez. “The City is committed to continue investing in projects that will make travel time less and ensure safety for pedestrians and bike riders. From that perspective, I would like to thank Roberto Rodriguez for his generous donation, Gilpin Engineering and Sherfey Engineering for making this project possible, and all City leaders for their support.”
