Funds aim to enhance quality of life and workforce development in 41 South Texas counties

Laredo, TX–  U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $199,370 in federal funding for the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV). The funds will allow UTRGV to provide technical assistance on rural economic resiliency and recovery, rural economic development and innovation, and cooperative approaches to enhancing quality of life and workforce development to 41 counties in South Texas.

The funds were awarded through U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Rural Cooperative Development Grant (RCDG) program.

“These funds will allow UTRGV to implement strategies that will propel economic growth and development in rural South Texas by assisting individuals and businesses in the startup, expansion, or operational improvement of rural cooperatives,” said Congressman Cuellar. “The RCDG program is an instrumental tool to create prosperous, sustainable communities. I will continue to work with UTRGV and USDA to take advantage of other initiatives that aim to improve our local economies.”

The Rural Cooperative Development Grant program improves the economic condition of rural areas by helping individuals and businesses start, expand or improve rural cooperatives and other mutually-owned businesses through Cooperative Development Centers.
