Washington, DC—Today, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) released the following statement regarding the Department of Homeland Security’s border barrier contract cancelation announcement:

“As a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee, and Vice Chair of the Homeland Security Subcommittee, I have worked hard to ensure the previous administration’s diverted military funding is returned, border wall construction is terminated, and local border communities receive those resources for legitimate priorities,” said Congressman Cuellar. “This announcement ensures that South Texas’ historic and cultural landmarks will remain protected, environmental standards upheld, and property rights maintained. Congressman Cuellar wants to see a secure border by having the right technology, personnel, and equipment. The United States must enter agreements with Mexico and Central American countries to stop the flow of people before the come in to the United States.”

Congressman Cuellar continued, “U.S. Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley and Laredo Sectors will now be able to utilize redirected funds for the deployment of innovative border security technology that helps DHS achieve operational control and provide situational awareness between the ports of entry. Nevertheless, we must continue fighting for Congress to cancel all remaining border wall contracts. I will continue my efforts to ensure that the residents of South Texas are protected from any further harm and that any funds are used for effective measures in securing our southern border.”

More specifically the cancelation includes the remaining DHS-funded border barrier contracts in the RGV and Laredo Sectors.
