Laredo Youth Council Accepting Applications for Inaugural Year

Courtesy David Alegria,

LAREDO, TEXAS – After a delay due to COVID-19, the City of Laredo is excited to launch the Laredo Youth Council (LYC) for high school juniors and seniors. This program will focus on community service, peer involvement, and will operate as mini-city councils that will deliberate issues and make recommendations. Our ultimate goal is to give youth a voice and a stake in our city government. The program was created through a Council motion from District Four Council Member, Alberto Torres, who brought this to City Council in February of 2020.

Participation in this Council will give students a first-hand and in depth opportunity to work with city leadership across departments and elected officials. They will hold monthly meetings and service events throughout the school year. Their participation and ideas will be brought to City Council for possible action. In addition, it will also include summer leadership internships within the city to teach hands-on city management and leadership experiences.

“What better way to continue building Laredo’s future than by encouraging our youth to be engaged in local initiatives and issues,” said District Four Council Member, Alberto Torres. “This is a tremendous opportunity for students that are getting ready for college admissions to engage with our community and participate alongside city leadership. Ultimately, this will provide us with energetic volunteers for civic projects, give us—the City Council – a fresh viewpoint on issues challenging our city, and create a sense of accomplishment for our youth.”

Incoming juniors and seniors from Laredo high schools are encouraged to apply. The application can be found here and may be submitted through email to kgarza2@ci.laredo.tx.us by May 21, 2021. For additional information on the program, call (956) 791-7304
