(Laredo, Texas)-UISD recently announced that George Washington Middle School would undergo a name change to honor Board member and Vietnam Veteran, Juan Roberto Ramirez. At Mr. Ramirez’s request, the UISD Board of Trustees has agreed to meet and discuss the rescission of its action to change the name of Washington Middle.
Mr. Ramirez has issued the following statement: “I am extremely thankful that my colleagues on the Board recently chose to honor me by renaming Washington Middle School after me. I am sorry for any frustration or distress that has arisen from the proposal to rename the campus. George Washington is the father of our country, our first President and one of the greatest leaders in world history. His name and legacy have been an integral part of our local traditions and celebrations since 1939.
Most importantly, Washington Middle School has enriched the lives of many students who have gone on to become great leaders in our community and beyond. I will continue to work with the Board of Trustees and our Superintendent to give students a superior public school education – and I thank my constituents for giving me the opportunity to make a positive difference in the lives of our students and their families for nearly twenty years.”
