George Washington Middle School To Undergo Name Change Next School Year

Courtesy Alex Meyer,

(Laredo, Texas)-After months of deliberation, the United ISD Board of Trustees finalized a decision to rename George Washington Middle School. The campus’ new name will honor UISD Board member Juan Roberto Ramirez.

The change will take effect in time for the 2021-2022 school year. Ramirez is a long-standing member of the UISD Board of Trustees with 18 years of distinguished service to the District.

He was first elected to his District 6 seat as UISD’s Board Secretary in 2002, and served in that capacity until 2005. He was then elected to the position of Board Secretary from 2009 to 2012, Board Vice-President from 2013-2016, and Board President in 2017. Ramirez also served a second term as Board Secretary between May 2018 and June 2019 – and currently remains serving as a Board member for District 6.

In addition to supporting projects and ideas that have spurred UISD’s success, Ramirez has also endeavored to improve the lives of economically disadvantaged students and families. He has served on business and educational committees and attended leadership seminars that teach leaders how to become even more resourceful in guiding a school district through positive reinforcement, discipline and motivation.”I am very flattered to have a school named after me. It is an honor to both me and my family.

I pledge to continue working hard for our students and constituents. I remind everyone that when we work as a united family we are able to accomplish great things and create equal opportunities for all of our students “, said Ramirez .

During the time Washington was alive and before, many people had slaves, black, oriental, white even children. That was then!
Stop wearing your feelings on your sleeves and get over it!
You start removing History, then we’ll be like Hitler. History needs to be remembered or we’re all in trouble!

1st president owned slaves, i wouldn’t want a schools name to be someone who wasn’t a good person. it wouldn’t affect me if it was changed

UISD Board Members, this is so pathetic and idiotic. Are you going to start renaming all the schools with your names? How much money is going to be spent renaming the school? Who is paying for this? If you want to spent money, spend it on our kids, teachers, school supplies, school activities and any other things that are needed. If you are so hard up naming something after wait for the next school built or name a school library or wing of a school after you and you yourself pay for the expenses incurred.

Pathetic! Only in Laredo would you rename a school that was named after our first president.
