Laredo, TX (Webb County) — Today, Sheriff Martin Cuellar announced that the Webb County Sheriff’s Office has acquired 22 state-of-the-art communication radios as part of a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) Program.

The grant, which totaled more than $79,000, was used to purchase the radios, which have been assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division.

The radios, which are one of the latest in communication portable devices, allows the newest of accessories to be attached from a headset to a remote speaker. They also have Bluetooth and GPS capabilities.

“These radios came in at no cost to the taxpayers,” said Sheriff Martin Cuellar. “Ever since I took office, I have been proactive in working to secure state and federal funds to better equip and protect my deputies. And what better way to equip and protect them than with the latest technology.”

The Department of Justice BJA program reinforces the nation’s criminal justice system by supporting programs and initiatives in the areas of law enforcement, justice information sharing, countering terrorism, managing offenders, combating drug crime and abuse, adjudication, advancing tribal justice, and crime prevention.
