LAREDO, Texas—Mayor Pete Saenz has issued the following statement regarding new restrictions at the ports of entry limiting cross-border travel to only essential travel. President Trump has ordered the implementation of this policy to take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, 2020. This joint initiative with Mexico will last for a period of 30 days and subject to extension.
“In light of the current grip and other unknown potential pandemic challenges of COVID-19 on our nation and the local community, restricting international travel, including border crossings, to only essential travel seems logical. Essential travel would be medical and educational travel, and emergency response. Tourism and recreational travel would not be considered essential. At the same time, commercial trade operations will not be affected during this time.
While this may be a temporary inconvenience for many of us, we must all do our part in combating this viral threat to human life and our economic well-being. I ask everyone to please fully cooperate with the mandatory social distancing and best hygiene guidelines as have been promulgated by the City of Laredo. Together, we will kill and defeat this silent enemy by simply starving it.”
