(Laredo, Texas)-In observance of cultural practices and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries, students from George Washington Middle School researched el Día de los Muertos throughout the month of October.
In addition to reading reading books about the holiday, students also watched documentary videos from Oaxaca, Mexico and Guatemala. Students were able to relate their learning experience to Coco, the popular animated movie. Students from Mrs. Maria Teresa Gutierrez’s Spanish classes created “Ofrendas” or special offerings for deceased loved ones along with “Calacas” (paper skeletons), dressed in colorful and creative attire. In addition, “Claveritas Literarias” (good-natured satirical poems), were written by students about administrators, teachers, family members, and friends. It was fun learning experience for all.
