(Laredo, Texas)-Recently, Cuellar Elementary School celebrated 20 years of educational excellence. The honorable Congressman Henry Cuellar, after whom the campus is named, was in attendance to mark the occasion. Current and former principals, students and staff enjoyed a morning of reunions and merriment. The revelry began with a morning reception in the campus library, and continued with an official ceremony and program in the school gymnasium.Superintendent Roberto J. Santos and Principal Andrea M.Sanchez initiated the program by welcoming attendees. Entertainment included performances by the Cuellar Elementary Choir and the Trautmann Middle School Mariachi Internacional. As part of the celebration, students from each grade level inserted tokens of the anniversary into a time capsule that was buried at the campus. Adding to the excitement was a visit from the San Antonio Spurs coyote mascot.

For the students in attendance, Congressman Cuellar articulated the importance of education, self-discipline, and a good work ethic. Cuellar also bestowed campus principals and leaders with Congressional Certificates of Recognition.

“One of my fondest memories is when I was told that this campus would bear my name. 20 years on, I remain deeply honored, and am proud of what this institution has achieved for students and families. I also wish to recognize Mr. Santos for his leadership and vision,” said Cuellar.  Cuellar Elementary School opened its doors in the fall of 1999, and currently has 625 students. This year, the Texas Education Agency designated Cuellar Elementary as an “A”rated campus that also earned 6 out of 6 academic distinctions from the agency.
