2018 McAllen Crime Estimates Released

The City of McAllen participates in the Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. This program makes possible the measurement and analysis of the crime index in a uniform manner.  The UCR program is the reporting of seven index crimes.

The department recognizes that these outcomes are the result of community-wide efforts.

Statement by V. Rodriguez, Chief of Police:

“Our community strives to prevent crime, to promote public safety and to participate in the investigation of crime when it does occur.  To this end, the Department expresses sincere appreciation to all members of our community and to the McAllen City Commission for their diligence and dedication to making public safety a top priority.   The Department expresses special thanks to the men and women of the McAllen Police Department for their hard work and successful outcomes.”       

We anticipate releasing our Crime in McAllen 2018 report on Friday, January 18, 2019.  Generally, the report will reflect the following information:

Crime by Volume (collective sum of reported crime):

Violent Crime decreased:               -41.1%

Property Crime decreased:              -3.8%

Crime Total decreased:                   -5.6%

Crime Rate (factors changes in population):

Violent Crime decreased:               -42.3%

Property Crime decreased:              -5.8%

Crime Total decreased:                   -7.6%

This report will indicate that during 2018, the department recorded 236 less offenses than in previous year.

Decreased number of offenses:          -275 offenses.

Decrease analysis:

Murder decreased:                          7 offenses.

Robbery decreased:                                    23 offenses.

Aggravated Assault decreased:      67 offenses.

Theft/Larceny decreased:               178 offenses.

Increased number of offenses:            39 offenses.

Increase analysis:

Rape increased:                               12 offenses.

Burglary increased:                         18 offenses.

Auto Theft increased:                     9 offenses.

Theft represents 64.7% of the decreased number of reported offenses.  As such, the Theft reports are analyzed as follows:

Theft increase/decrease analysis:

Pick Pocket:                                    0 offenses.

Purse snatching:                              -2 offenses.

Shoplifting:                                     -113 offenses.

Theft from Autos:                           -181 offenses.

Theft of auto parts:                         -4 offenses.

Theft of bicycles:                            -2 offenses.

Theft from buildings:                      17 offenses.

Theft from coin machines:              6 offenses.

Theft – all other:                             101 offenses.
