Michelle Cantú named Principal for Ruiz Elementary School

(Laredo, Texas)_The United Independent School District Board of Trustees and Superintendent Roberto J. Santos named Mrs. Michelle Cantú as the new Principal for Ruiz Elementary School effective the 2018-2019 school year. The formal appointment was made on May 17, 2018.
Mrs. Cantú is a native Laredoan and graduated from Texas A&M International University with Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education with a specialization in Early Childhood Education. She holds Bilingual and GT certifications. In 2009, she graduated with a Master of Science in Education degree from Texas A&M International University.
She began employment with United ISD in 1998 as a Kindergarten teacher at Colonel Santos Benavides Elementary. In 2002, she was awarded the prestigious Elementary Teacher of the Year for United ISD.
During her years as a teacher, Ms. Cantú was a presenter at various educational conferences at TAMIU and in the Rio Grande Valley where she showcased how to incorporate Dual Language and GT strategies in the early childhood classroom.
From 2006-2013, Cantu served as a Bilingual Coordinator for the district specializing in the Dual Language Program. From 2014 to the present, she has served as Assistant Principal at Killam Elementary and presently at Amparo Gutierrez Elementary.

Mrs. Cantu succeeds Mrs. Caryn Fox who has accepted another position within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
