Courtesy Rocio Moore,

On Monday, March 19, 2018 two UISD educators were named as finalists for the 2018 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. The annual program spotlights the best educators in South Texas. Zaida Gonzalez, principal at Trautmann Elementary School, was presented with a $1,000 check for herself and a $2,500 check for her school as a finalist in the Principal Elementary category, and Andrea Garza, a teacher at United South High School, was presented with a $1,000 check for herself and a $1,000 check for her school as a finalist in the Leadership Secondary category.

The announcements were made during surprise visits by H-E-B representatives to each of the finalist’s campuses. Six additional South Texas finalists will be announced this week, and all finalists are invited to Houston on May 5-6, 2018 to compete on a statewide level for larger cash prizes totaling $430,000. H-E-B launched the Excellence in Education Awards program in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators in 2002 as a way to show support for quality public education in Texas. It is also the largest monetary awards program for educators in Texas, and among the largest in the nation. The program spotlights best practices and celebrates the passion and creativity of Texas educators.
